MATERIAL WORKS - off the Wall
An exhibition of new work by the PSG (now Textile Study Group)
held at The Engine House, Enginuity, The Museum of Iron, Ironbridge, Telford, Salop TF8 7AW
6 April 2003 - 9 May 2003
The PSG (now Textile Study Group) took on an exciting new challenge, to work with the Museum of Iron at the World Heritage Site at the Museum of Iron, Telford.
The Museum of Iron had recently opened Enginuity, an exciting new facility which looks at the way in which designers use materials and processes to solve problems and create solutions. Enginuity is a very "hands on" experience, aimed at school and family groups of all ages. Visitors can build arches, scan high-tech equipment for its material content and move a full size railway engine with their own hands, amongst many other experiences. There are also design challenges to work on in the design area and 3D workshop.
MATERIAL WORKS off the Wall explored the way in which artists who work with stitch respond to the inspiring collection of artefacts, both on display and in the Reserve Collection at the Museum. The Textile Study Group are all educators and their individual responses reflected their desire to communicate their involvement with textiles to the specific audiences at Enginuity and the Museum of Iron.
MATERIAL WORKS off the Wall, showed 3D work in the stunning Engine House adjacent to Enginuity. This vast space created an exciting stimulus for the group's work, which was all "off the wall". Some of the work was shown in, or out of, context by the inclusion of exhibits from the collection at the Museum of Iron.
During the exhibition the PSG ran a series of Gallery Activities aimed at school and family groups of all ages, giving practical opportunities to have fun exploring, questioning, making and stimulating curiosity about stitched textiles.
