Penny Burnfield's work is wide-ranging - the common thread that ties it all together is a passion for history, a sense of the past.
Themes include personal and social histories - museums, collections and archives - marks and traces left on the environment - layers of meaning and memories.
A former doctor, she also has a special interest in science. Work has included installations resembling bio-medical museum displays, and challenges pre-conceptions about the collection and categorisation of objects.
Although trained as a textile artist, Penny uses any material or technique that will best express her ideas. Work may be two- or three-dimensional, or take the form of an installation. An experimental approach results in a diverse practice.
Penny taught for several years in Adult Education, and is now a freelance artist. She has exhibited widely including 'Art Textiles 2', 'The Art of the Stitch' and with The Crafts Council. She is a member of The 62 Group, The Embroiderers' Guild, The Textile Study Group, The Hampshire Sculpture Trust and the exhibiting group Losing the Thread.
